San Juan, Dec 5 (EFE).- The Taiwan Embassy in St. Lucia donated 1,200 Christmas toys to the island’s poor children to enjoy the season.

The government of St. Lucia said the gifts were presented at a brief ceremony at Prime Minister Kenny Anthony’s official residence by Taiwan’s ambassador, James Chang.

The toys will be distributed to members of Parliament for disbursement to underprivileged children in their respective constituencies.

“It is a joyous thing to see children with their gifts at Christmas time, but not all children are equally fortunate. The CHCA, together with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Government of Saint Lucia have taken up the challenge to give to as many children as possible,” Chang said.

Chang said that since the program began 11 years ago, over 7,000 toys have been presented to the children of St. Lucia.

Anthony expressed his gratitude to Taiwan and recalled how many children suffered last year at Christmas as a direct result of flooding, particularly in Bexon, Vieux Fort, Laborie, Soufriere, Choiseul and Anse La Raye.

“They were denied a Christmas, they were denied the opportunity to celebrate, because of the events of that trough. I pray to God that we have a peaceful Christmas, and that we do not go through a similar experience,” Anthony said.
