St. Lucia waives VAT for certain products during Christmas

San Juan, Nov 19 (EFE).- The St. Lucia House of Assembly approved a measure to waive the value added tax on certain products for personal use during the Christmas season.

Prime Minister Kenny Anthony presented the resolution to the Assembly along with terms and conditions of the concessions, according to a government statement released on Wednesday.

“There will be a 100 percent waiver of import duty on personal items, food, clothing, toys and other household consumables contained in barrels imported between Dec. 1, 2014, and Feb. 15, 2015,” the government said.

Products such as toys, personal items, food and clothing are exempt from VAT, while specified electronic items will remain subject to the levy.

The government said penalties and fines will be imposed on those who buy VAT-exempt goods for commercial purposes.
