San Juan, Nov 18 (EFE).- Rebuilding a main road damaged by heavy rains will cost around 50 million TTD ($8 million), Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure said Tuesday.

Work has already begun on the damaged stretch of road between Manzanilla and Mayaro on the east coast of Trinidad, the ministry said.

Flooding caused by heavy rains last weekend washed away 300 meters (983 ft.) of asphalt, Highways director Roger Ganesh said.

The affected roadway has been closed and local authorities have advised residents to take alternative routes and avoid coming to the area to take photographs.

Emergency agencies are aiding residents affected by the floods in Mayaro and Sangre Grande, with an emphasis “on sheltering, relief distribution and evacuation, as well as search and rescue activities,” according to the statement.
