A Guyana Defence Force plane crashed on Wednesday at Camp Jaguar in the New River are, but no one was injured, the army said in a statement.

“None of the persons on board was injured,” the GDF said. Well-placed sources said the plane was badly damaged.

The GDF explained that the plane, bearing registration GDF-3, crashed on landing at about 1:50 PM.

The six-seater was seized several years ago after it was found to have been involved in illegal activities, most likely drug smuggling.

A Board of Inquiry team is expected to fly to the location on Thursday to probe the incident.

Piloting the aircraft was Captain Paul Dalgetty.

Further details will be provided on the completion of the inquiry, said the GDF.

Neighbouring Suriname claims the New River Triangle as hers, but the area remains under Guyanese occupation.
