Johnny Singh

The proprietor of Guyana Variety Store and Nut Centre on Monday  admitted to firing several shots outside his mother-in-law’s house due to a bitter domestic dispute after he was arraigned on a terror-related charge.

City Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan remanded Johnny Singh to prison until August 15 pending a probation report.

Also known as “God” and “Superman,” he was charged with wantonly discharging a loaded firearm in a public place with intent to cause public terror.

Singh told the court that prior to the alleged incident on Monday, August 11 at Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara his wife used indecent language to him for half an hour and informed him that she wanted a divorce and a settlement.

He admitted to discharging several rounds from his licensed firearm in an effort to get his children, who are American citizens, to go with him because they had initially not answered him and his brother-in-law had refused him entry to the yard. The businessman said he had wanted his children to collect their passports so that he could have taken them on a vacation.

Singh said that he eventually entered the yard and told several children there to move and when he discharged a number of rounds, his children ran downstairs into his Hummer.

After the children entered his vehicle, he said he drove to Police Headquarters, Eve Leary and the Alberttown Police Station where he lodged complaints against his brother-in-law and that his children were unprotected.

Defence Lawyer, Basil Williams said that Singh’s wife was in the courtroom and that she was willing to take him to a counselor. The lawyer said the businessman did not intend to injure anyone.
