President Donald Ramotar has approved the appointment of a legal advisor for the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the person of former Justice of Appeal, Claudette Singh.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon.

Justice Singh, a distinguished jurist, headed the recently concluded Justice Sector Modernisation Programme and served as Commissioner on the Linden Commission of Inquiry which ended early last year.

Dr. Luncheon explained that while the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is responsible for advising the police, there continues to be a significant element of police work, in terms of investigations and prosecutions that warrants the physical access to a legal advisor on a day to day basis.

“What former Justice Singh offers the GPF, is access to quality legal advice right at their doorstep, 24 hours, seven days a week. I believe that it is a welcomed addition in the assets that the police force throws into the struggle against crime in Guyana,” the HPS said.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also endorsed the President’s decision to substantively appoint Welton Trotz as Director of Prisons and Carl Graham at Deputy Director of Prisons. Both individuals are currently holding acting appointments in the same capacity to which they have been confirmed.
