Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), David Granger said Sunday evening that it was a member of the Returning Officer’s security team that discharged a loaded firearm during the party’s 18th biennial congress.

“The person whose image is there might have been engaged to secure the Returning Officer’s staff, not by Congress Place,” he told a news conference. He pointed out that the Returning Officer’s team was separate from the party’s administration.

The party leader said a “crowd of persons” broke the barrier and forced their way into the auditorium. “At that time, it seemed as tough somebody was in danger of being crushed and that might have been the incident,” he added.

The firearm was in possession of Lyndon Primo. The PNCR leader further explained that the explosion appeared to have come from a handgun. Granger said the incident was being investigated by the PNCR’s security and the police would be notified.

PNCR Chairman, Basil Williams said that so far he has learnt that “a position was stormed” and a firearm was discharged.
When the gunshot was discharged at 12:11 PM, several persons were seen running around the congress venue seeking cover.
