Lethem gold miner charged with narco-trafficking

A gold miner of Nappie, Lethem was Wednesday refused bail on a charge of being in possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Godfrey Jonas, 55, told Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he was innocent of the charge after it was read to him.

The unrepresented Jonas was remanded to prison until September 1 when he would appear in the Lethem Magistrates’ Court. Bail was refused because no special reason was given to the court.

Police said that on July 14 at Aranaputa, Region Nine, Jonas was in possession of 775 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said police went to the accused man’s home where he was seen untying a bag from his pedal cycle.

A search by the lawmen revealed that the man allegedly had in his possession a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems that were wrapped in a black and yellow plastic bag.
