Two Prison officers were Thursday arrested and handed over to police for allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana into the Georgetown Prison, officials confirmed.

Head of the Police Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Leslie James said the men were arrested and charges would be instituted swiftly.

“We are looking at deterrence because how can prison officers who are entrusted with prisoners be taking illicit substances into the prison,” James added.

Well-placed sources said the discovery of 492 grammes of marijuana was made at about 7:40 AM shortly after the prison officers entered the prison gate.

When the prison officers attempted to flee, other members of the prison service have chance and apprehended them.
