A man was shot late Saturday night at Friendship, East Bank Demerara during a robbery attempt, police said.

He has been identified as a 33-year old Anthony Johnson of Friendship Squatting Area. Police said he was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital for a gunshot injury to his right thigh.

Police sources said the man shot about 11 O’clock Saturday night. Johnson, a taxi driver and labourer, had moments before exited a minibus and was walking home when the bandits pounced on him. They took away his watch and GUY$7,000, police said.

Chief of Criminal Investigations, Senior Superintendent Leslie James told Demerara Waves that Johnson was walking in a westerly direction when he saw two men walking behind him. James said the victim quickened his pace and the men did likewise. James said gunshots were fired behind Johnson when he began running away.

After he was injured, the men grabbed the valuables and fled the scene by which time an alarm was raised. No one has been arrested.
