The prisoner, who escaped from the Providence Police Station lock-up Sunday night, was Tuesday jailed for 12 months.

He is 29-year old Lennox Cort of 60 Hadfield Street, Georgetown. He pleaded guilty to committing the offence of escaping from lawful custody.

Cort was at the time being held in connection with his alleged assault of his girlfriend. Police said he  escaped through the grill work and was later recaptured in the neighbouring Greenfield Park area.

The court was told that Cort allegedly struck his cousin, Devon Pile, to his head with a piece of wood after he intervened in an alleged dispute. Cort had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.

Pile fell and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
