COPA Airlines on Wednesday assured that research has shown that the Guyana-Panama route is viable and the airline is here for the long haul but the Latin American carrier declined to provide figures.

“Once we open a destination, we are not just testing to see how we go. We are sure that we are going to do well and, off course, our intention is that we are going to be for a long, long time in Guyana,” Vice President (Sales) Guillermo Gomez Wilches told reporters.

He noted that COPA has been flying consistently to at least 20 destinations in the past four years and has remained there.

Wilches expects that travelling on COPA will peak in months other than July-August when Guyanese mostly fly to and from the United States and Canada. He is confident that Guyanese will take advantage of travelling to Panama for business and pleasure at affordable fares.

He said he would not divulge the statistics because COPA’s competitors would want to take advantage of them. “We have those numbers but unfortunately I can’t share it with you because I don’t want to open the appetite for other carriers,” he said.

The COPA official said his carrier’s business model provides for connections to other destinations in the Americas and worldwide through its Star Alliance partnership with other airlines.

The airline begins flying the Guyana-Panama route from July 11.
