Pro- Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Prem Misir

Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Prem Misir has resigned more than one year ahead of the end of his term of office.

His resignation, which takes effect on June  2, 2014, was dated May 6, 2014 and circulated to Council members.

“I think now is as good time as any to pursue my other professional career goals and interests in the service of this country,” he told Council Members.

Professor Misir has served as UG’s Pro Chancellor for four terms since he was first appointed on October 21, 2003.

UG Registrar, Vincent Alexander said when the Council met on April 26, 2014 there was no indication from Misir that he was going to quit the post.

“The University community didn’t expect it,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.

Alexander said the Council would decide from among its ranks who would succeed Misir as Pro Chancellor.

The outgoing Pro Chancellor credited himself with providing leadership in higher education at this richly diverse institution. “During my tenure, the University of Guyana made significant gains with the cooperation of the University Council, Committee of Deans, the University of Guyana Students Society and the Peoples Progressive Party Civic administration,” he said in his resignation.

In the absence of the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor performs the functions of the Chancellor.
