New Amsterdam prisoner critically injured by fellow inmate

An inmate of the New Amsterdam prison was up to late Tuesday afternoon in a critical condition after he was stabbed by another inmate there.

He is Brian Hescott of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara. Sources said his left lung was damaged after he was stabbed with two ‘jookas’ (sharpened ice picks). Hescott was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Hescott is serving 54 months imprisonment for robbery under arms.

The alleged perpetrator is Derrick Callendar of James Street, Albouystown. Callendar was also sustained injuries to his right hand.

The details of the disagreement were not immediately available.

Callendar is serving life imprisonment for murder, having been convicted and lost his appeal. His death sentence has been commuted to life imprison.
