Guyana has intervened in the reported refusal by Trinidad and Tobago’s Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex to render medical treatment to a Guyanese man who later succumbed to a heart attack.

“Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be aggressively pursuing the matter with the authorities of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,” said the Guyana Foreign Ministry.

Trinidad Guardian newspaper reported that the reason given was because 35-year-old Guyanese national Jeetindra Sookram was a foreigner. He died one hour after he was refused treatment.

Saying that it was “deeply concerned” about the incident, the Guyana government said it has instructed Honorary Consul General of Guyana in the Republic of Trinidad.

“The Minister has assured that the matter is already under investigation and has reaffirmed the principle that no one should ever be refused emergency medical attention at any hospital,” the foreign minister said.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is requesting that the bereaved family members make contact with Mr Ross at the Guyana Consulate at 16 Gray Street, St Clair, Port of Spain or on telephone number 868-622-2913.
