Fake kidnapped victim charged

A man who allegedly faked his kidnap in the hope of obtaining a GUY$3.5 million from his relatives at Enmore, East Coast Demerara was Monday arraigned on a charge of attempting to commit a felony aimed at obtaining money by false pretence.

Ramraj Singh,19, was granted GUY$200,000 bail when he appeared before a magistrate at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court. He has to return toi court on April 14, 2014.

Police said he allegedly committed the offence between Marcvh 24 and 26. “Based on subsequent police investigations, including the tracking of phone calls, it was suspected that the “kidnapping” had been concocted.As a result, a sting operation was set up and the “kidnap victim” was arrested on 2014-03-26 as he turned up to pick up the “ransom money” at the agreed on location,” police said.

Investigators recalled that about 3:45 PM on March 25, Singh’s relatives at Foulis, Enmore reported to the police that at about 7:15  PM on March 24 they had received a telephone call to the effect that he had been kidnapped and a demand of $3.5M was made for his safe return.

Singh was reported to have left home earlier during the evening of March 24 to buy a phone card.
