Man jailed for domestic violence, assaulting police

A man who assaulted his common-law wife and behaved badly to police when they went to arrest him would have to spend the next 12 months in jail.

The sentence was imposed on 39 year old Orlando Grumble of 207 Alexander Street, Bourda, Georgetown after he pleaded guilty to 10 charges when he appeared before City Magistrate, Geeta Chandan-Edmond.

He had earlier pleaded innocent on his first court appearance on March 14.

Grumble was sentenced to three consecutive months imprisonment on each assault charge committed on his reputed wife, Karen Bender, and three months on each of the seven remaining charges that will run concurrently.

In handing down her sentence, the magistrate considered that Grumble breached a restraining order and the prevalence of domestic violence against women.

The charges are that Bender on February 19 at Charlotte Street, Georgetown

1.       unlawfully assaulted his reputed wife, Karen Bender

2.      used abusive language to Bender, where a breach of the peace may be occasioned


On March 13 at at Alexander Street, Georgetown

3.      behaved disorderly in a public place

4.      made use of abusive language to Kenrick Hodge, a peace officer

5.      unlawfully assaulted

6.      resisted arrest from the said officer

On March 13 at at Alexander Street, Georgetown

7.      he made use of indecent language to another peace officer, Jonnel Shepherd.

8.      he again unlawfully assaulted

9.      made use of abusive language

10.  threatening language to Karen Bender, where the breach of the peace may be occasioned.

Grumble apologized for his misconduct and said that it was the first time that he had hit Bender after they had spent 18 months together.
