The floor of a packed and overflowing church at Port Kaituma caved in while the service for the charred remains of the mother and her four children was underway.

No one was injured. Several persons exited the church through the window to avoid a stampede. The service was later moved from the Port Kaituma Christ Crusaders Assembly to the Fitzburg ball field.

The most touching of all moments was when the two coffins bearing the mortal remains of the La Cruzs were placed on two zinc sheets outside what is left of their house and business on Main Road, Port Kaituma.port kaituma church

The man, who allegedly set the house afire last Friday night with his wife and children, was Tuesday due to be flown to Georgetown for further medical treatment and questioning by investigators.

Those who perished were Lurlene La Cruz, 39 years; her daughters Lea La Cruz, 14 years, and Lavette La Cruz, 3 years; and sons Labron La Cruz, 8 years, and Levon La Cruz, 1 year.
