Bandits caught after robbing gas station

Several bandits who Friday night robbed and attempted to burn down a gas station on the West Coast Demerara were caught at a road block , police said.

The incident occurred at the “On The Go” gas station at Nismes Village about 10:30 PM. Three of the five robbers were later caught at a road block near the Demerara Harbour Bridge and one was arrested in Albouystown, Georgetown.

The pump attendants said they were watching wrestling when five bandits arrived on foot. They were armed with knives, ice-picks and a handgun.

The gas station is owned by Stephen Persaud of Vive La Force village. 

Pump attendant , 25-year old Hassan Khan was robbed of an undisclosed sum of cash and three men who were with watching television were robbed of a total of GUY$13,600.00 and two cell phones. The men escaped in a motor vehicle.

Subsequent investigations by the police led to the arrest of a man and the detaining of the vehicle at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara. Further investigations led to the arrest of three other men in a mini-bus at the Demerara Harbour Bridge and another man at Hunter Street, Albouystown, police said.

The two stolen cell phones were recovered.

Hours earlier about 5 PM Friday, police arrested two men at a Chinese restaurant at Harlem. A snob nose .38 Taurus revolver was recovered.

Investigators said the men confessed to hijacking a car from a taxi driver Narine Bahadur at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop after robbing him of GUY$5,000. They had entered the vehicle under the pretext of hiring it to travel from Vreed-en-Hoop to Parika.
