Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett on Monday said she was probing a report of irregularities at the Consulate in Boa Vista, Brazil.

She said a probe was launched after she received a letter from someone that led to unsatisfactory answers in response to very direct questions about a “couple of things”.

“There were some specific things in the letter that required ‘yes’ ‘no’ answers and we didn’t get straightforward answers in the original interrogation so I asked for a full investigation to be done,” said Rodrigues-Birkett.

She declined to say whether the issues included alleged misuse of consular property. “At the end of it, I think we would be able to say whether it includes all of those but it certainly did include some wrongdoing,” said the minister.

That Consulate is headed by Leila King, the widow of Guyanese businessman David King.

The Foreign Minister suggested that based on the trend of the probe, changes would be coming soon at the Boa Vista Honorary Consulate after the investigations are concluded shortly. “We will take the necessary action as soon as the report is submitted to me,” she said.

She assured that the administrative problems had not affected relations between Guyana and Brazil.
