A woman, who allegedly attempted to smuggle a quantity of marijuana in a bail of toilet paper, was Thursday arraigned on a drug possession and trafficking charge.

Thirty-nine year old Sharon Campbell of Section C, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara was refused bail and remanded to prison until Friday when she is expected to reappear in court.

The prosecution successfully opposed bail on the grounds that the woman’s lawyer did not provide special reasons for her to be granted her pre-trial liberty.

Campbell pleaded not guilty to being in possession of 24 grams if marijuana for the purpose of trafficking on January 23.

The prosecution’s case is that on January 23 at River Crest Shipping Company, Light and Albert Streets, Georgetown Campbell sought to post a package to Mazaruni. Security personnel were called in after a check revealed that three rolls of toilet paper in a bale of the product were replaced with black plastic bags. On further checks, the security officer found that the bags had contained weeds, seeds and stems suspected to have been marijuana.

The court was also told that Campbell attempted to bribe the security officer when the bust was made and the police were about to be summoned.

Defence Lawyer, Clyde Forde told the court that the woman’s friend had asked her to post the package to the interior location. He said Campbell did not know that marijuana was stashed in the bale of toilet paper.
