Fire Wednesday morning destroyed a house at D’ Edward Village, West Coast Berbice, leaving in its wake millions of dollars in losses and at least five persons homeless.

The concrete and wooden building was the home of a liquor restaurant and dwelling on the lower flat and a dwelling on the upper flat.

Those homeless include 68-year old Vadoomatie Sitaram, her granddaughter Simone Sahadeo, grandson Tameshwar Sahadeo, his wife-Reshma- and their five year old child.

Located a short distance away from the Berbice Harbour Bridge, the house began being engulfed by flames about 7:30 AM  when  Sitaram and Simone saw smoke emanating from a section of the building close to the main switch and fuse box.

The occupants and neighbours reported seeing flames crawling on burning electrical wires.

Residents in the area want a thorough probe and compensation by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).

Top officials of the Region Five administration visited the scene and promised assitance to the affected family whose house was not uninsured. The occupants estimated their losses at more than GUY$20 million.
