A female pump attendant, who allegedly guzzled GUY$2.7 from the sale of fuels at a filling station in Lethem and GUY$48,000 cash, was Wednesday granted bail on an embezzlement charge.

Bibi Ameena Hamza of 397 Parika, East Bank Essequibo was granted GUY$250,000 bail and ordered to report every Friday to Eve Leary Police Station until her next court appearance on February 3.

Particulars of the offence are that between December 25 and January 8, she allegedly 6,532 litres of diesel and 3,932 litres of gasoline, valued GUY$2.7M from Lammy’s Gas Station.

She is also accused of embezzling GUY$48,000 cash taken into her possession by her or in the name or account of her employer while being a clerk or servant.

The court was told that Hamza was employed by Alisha Laikram at the filling station and during the period mentioned she was responsible for the business.

Defence Lawyer, Jerome Khan said the woman was employed since May 2013 and when the allegation was made she was at the hospital receiving treatment for dengue fever.

Khan disputed that Hamza was in charge of the business at that time, saying instead that a man knows and White Coats was responsible for the business and had sole access to the cash box.

The lawyer said White Coats is Laikram’s son and it was when Hamza was on duty that she realised that the cash was missing. Khan said he was advised that the money was taken to take someone to Boa Vista for medical attention.
