Investigators were Wednesday expected to conduct ballistic tests to determine whether a policeman was shot by ‘friendly fire’ or  with a gun that a detainee had grabbed from another policeman shortly before escaping from custody at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Deputy Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud told Demerara Waves Online News that the autopsy revealed that Detective Corporal Seburn Elias died of shock and haemorrhage due to a gunshot wound.

Persaud said a warhead was removed from Elias’ body and tests were expected to be done to ascertain which gun fired the fatal shot.

Guyana Police Force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker later said in a statement that a warhead was removed from the body by Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh and subsequent tests done by the Police Ballistics Section have confirmed that it was a .38 round.

Elias was shot and killed on Monday January 06, 2014, by a prisoner who had escaped from police custody during efforts to recapture him. The prisoner had taken away a policeman’s .38 service revolver in the process of his escape.
