Popular radio broadcaster dies

Long-serving radio broadcaster, Oswald Singh, died late Monday night at the Woodlands Hospital following a heart attack.

He was in his 50s.

Singh was hospitalised on Sunday.

Up to the time of his passing, he worked at the privately-owned Radio Guyana International (RGI).

Singh joined radio in the mid 1980s at the now defunct Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). There, he made a name for himself in the field of Current Affairs and various programmes including Good Morning Guyana. Former Programme Manager at GBC, Margaret Lawrence recalled Singh’s qualities that took him through a successful broadcasting career. “He was very, very respectful, polite, eager and willing. He possessed distinctive voice with a resounding timbre. Oswald was a good team player,” said Lawrence.

After taking a break, he returned to what is now the state-owned National Communications Network (NCN) where he worked until the radio spectrum was liberalised.

Less that one year ago, Singh then moved across to the privately-owned RGI where he hosted several programmes. They included Lunch With Mattai, Afternoon with Mattai, Ek-Haseen-Shamko (A Beautiful Evening) and Oriental Fiesta for Twins Manufacturing.
At RGI, he was also a morning radio personality several days per week.

Singh was an old student of Queens College.
