The Comfort Sleep factory engulfed in flames Thursday evening

Fire of unknown origin around 5:45 Thursday afternoon gutted Comfort Sleep Mattress factory located at Industrial Site, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

That fire came almost one month after a similarly huge blaze partly destroyed Comfort Sleep’s bond also at Industrial Site, Eccles.

Speaking to Demerara Waves, the brother-in-law of the owner Paul Kristen said the fire was “not natural”. He recalled being informed by telephone that there was yet again another fire but he said he did not believe since there was a fire only a few weeks ago.

A tearful Paul stated that his brother-in-law recently imported a number of items to
re-establish his business.

Employees,, who returned to the scene, were saddened, saying that they were once more jobless. One tearful employee told Demerara Waves that she was at home when her brother in law received a call saying that the factory was on fire.

Meanwhile Fire Chief Marlon Gentle stated that fire fighters, on arrival, reported that the fire was completely involved and the building was on the verge of collapsing. He said they then forged ahead with the next plan of containing the fire.

He further stated that the fire quickly burnt because of the highly flammable chemicals being stored for the manufacturing of foam mattresses which were also stored there.

Mr. Gentle says fire fighters enough fire tenders were on the ground to ensure that the fire did not spread.

The Fire Chief stated that he would not endanger the lives of the fire fighters since the building can collapse at any time so they would remain on the outside and douse the fire.

Comfort Sleep’s last fire began about 7 PM on October 30, 2013.
