Five suspects in car theft arrested, one shot

A key suspect in the theft of two motorcars from an auto sales company was shot and injured in an exchange of gunfire with police and several car parts were found in a house where five men were seen, police said.

Lloyd “Belly” Johnson was shot about his body. “Upon seeing the police Lloyd Johnson opened fire on the ranks in a bid to escape. The police returned fire and he was struck to his abdomen and left thigh,” police said in a statement.

He is currently a patient at the Georgetown Hospital under police guard.

Police said they recovered one .32 revolver with three live rounds and one spent shell from the scene.

The shootout occurred at a house at Lilendaal, East Coast Demerara where police had gone to probe the larceny of two motor vehicles from Selena Auto Sales at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

Four of the other men were arrested, but one managed to escape.

Police said during a search of the house, four complete car doors and a rear bumper were found.

Further inquires, they said, led to the search of a house at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, where the body of one of the stolen motor vehicles and a number of parts that had been stripped off were found. A man was arrested.
