Civil Defence Commission expands Volunteer Corps to Region Nine

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has expanded its Volunteer Corps (VC) to Region Nine – Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo- with assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

On Wednesday November 13, 2013, the CDC VC Officially launched its Region 9 arm. The registered members comprising persons from North, South and Central Rupununi, were issued their CDC VC Pins along with the CDC VC branded jerseys and hats. The Region 9 members also elected a three- member management committee comprising a Coordinator (Mr. Richard Rennie), Deputy Coordinator (Mr. Alister Charlie) and a Secretary (Ms. Kateri Joseph). These persons will be responsible for the routine management of the Region 9 arm of the CDC VC.

The CDC VC has in excess of 200 registered members. The CDC VC intends to officially establish itself in all 10 administrative regions of Guyana. Thus far, this has been done in Regions 4, 6 and 9; with plans to have official launching in the remaining regions within the next 24 months.

The CDC VC works towards assisting the CDC in achieving its mandate of promoting Comprehensive Disaster Management nationwide while at the same time building the disaster risk management capacity of all Guyanese. The CDC VC is focused on working with communities across Guyana. (CDC)
