The body of a Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) official was recovered from the Pomeroon River Monday morning two days after a river mishap.

Natural Resources Minister, Robert Persaud said Patrick Ramkellawan’s wife was traveling from West Coast Berbice to identify a body.

“She is coming down to identify a body that was retrieved from the Pomeroon River which we suspect is his. Our worst fears have been confirmed,” Persaud told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

The minister said a probe into the incident would be held.  “We will be having a full investigation to find out why they were on the river at that time,” he said.

Kellawan also known as “Police” disappeared Saturday night  when the speedboat he was traveling in slammed into a fishing boat.

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) was quoted in another section of the media as saying that he and others had been imbibing before the incident.

Police spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said that at about 9:50  Saturday night the river mishap in the Pomeroon River occurred involving a motor vessel driven by Edroy Gill, 27 years, of Friendship, Pomeroon and a fishing boat.

Investigations have so far revealed  Kellawan and Martin Chappel, 66 years, of Linden were in motor vessel proceeding up the Lower Pomeroon River when it collided with fishing boat. Kellawan fell overboard as a result of the collision.

The GGMC officials had been in the area to examine a natural gas deposit at Friendship, Lower Pomeroon.
