More than 500 students of the Port Kaituma Secondary School,  along with their parents, on Wednesday protested  the conditions of that institution in the area including a severe shortage off teachers .

Parents in the Region One area told Demerara Waves that they decided to protest the conditions at the school early Wednesday morning since the issues affecting the school have been made known for a number of months but no one in authority seemed ready to listen to their concerns.

Calls to the number for the head teacher of the school went unanswered as reports emerged that a meeting was called by the Region One administration to address the situation.

According to a parent, more than 100 parents, along with their children, banded themselves with placards and stood at the schools’ gates and voiced their concerns. Among them being the absence of a Mathematics teacher for CSEC students , only 12 teachers on duty to attend to the 681 students a well as the general unhealthy conditions of the school compound.

They said that the school’s compound has been filled with thick vegetation for months and since the August holiday period, the administration has been asked to ensure that the institution is readied for the new school year.
They complained, too, that the school’s toilets and general sanitary facilities are in a deplorable state .

A number of the placards read,”We need teachers ASAP”, “Why are they not sending VSOs (Voluntary Services Overseas) to teach us ” and “We need people with vision for our community and children”.

Reports are that the District Education Officer attached to the sub-region was hurried to the area Wednesday as the situation was being highlighted by the vociferous parents along with their children.
