Two nabbed in connection with huge marijuana fields

Ten acres of marijuana plants were Monday destroyed and two men were arrested, police said.

Guyana Police Force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said two men are to be charged in connection with the two fields of marijuana at Yarrowkabra, Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Sources said they told police that they were labourers who were taken there to plant the marijuana.

Five other men escaped from the team of policemen when they heard the vehicle approaching the area located about 15 miles from the highway.

Police said they destroyed the plants ranging in height between three feet and 10 feet. Sources the three acre plot had about 30,000 plants and the seven acres an estimated 90,000 plants.

Also burnt were nurseries and a large quantity of seedlings, and three camps. The tarpaulin camps were equipped with a bed, hammock and kitchen.

No weapon or ammunition was found.
