A tense calm Saturday night gripped Wakenaam after gunmen invaded the Essequibo Island and entered home and shot a businessman, well-placed sources said.

Three wedding receptions on different parts of the island ceased and residents stayed indoors as the news spread across the 7.5 square mile agriculture-dependent island whose population is about 10,000 persons.

Sources said eight attackers arrived by boat quietly having turned off their outboard engine.

Businessman, Anand Danashore was shot to his left shoulder. He was at one of the wedding receptions when the bandits turned up at his home at Good Success asking for him. On arriving, he was shot. The bandits proceeded to beat his wife, daughter and her boyfriend. Initial information received from several residents is that the unnamed boyfriend was robbed of a gold band.

Danashore owns a vessel that transports wood for Barama Company Limited.

The Divisional Commander and a patrol have been deployed to the island because they are afraid to go outside since the incident.

Good Success is located a short distance away from the Wakenaam Ferry Stelling.
