A customs broker charged with trafficking in marijuana was Wednesday acquitted because there was no evidence to link him to the crime.

Malcolm Sonaram was accused of trafficking in 19 kilogrammes 930 grammes of the narcotic between December 2011 and January 2012 at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation wharf.

The prosecution’s case was that the marijuana had been found concealed in a shipment of pumpkins that was destined for Barbados.

However, City Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered that the prosecution close its case.

Defence Lawyer, Sanjeev Datadin confirmed to Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) that while the police had tendered several pieces of physical evidence, they could not prove that any was linked to Sonaram.

The lawyer had maintained throughout the trial that his client had nothing to do with marijuana.
