Bad weather puts GPL on alert

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) on Wednesday said it was on alert to deal with faults as a result of extremely bad weather that already resulted in a total shutdown one day earlier.

“All arrangements are in place to supplement emergency responses to deal with the expected increase in number/severity of faults as a result of the inclement weather,” the power company said in a statement.

The assurance came as bad weather Wednesday morning continued to affect Georgetown and other sections of the coast.

GPL said in a statement that around 2:33 Tuesday  afternoon, adverse weather one of two transmission lines linking Garden of Eden and Sophia tripped on a transient ground fault, affecting generating sets in operation. That resulted in a total shutdown within the Demerara Interconnected System, the power company added.

GPL added that the machines were quickly brought back on line, and restoration of power began at approximately 14:49hrs.  AT 15:39, full restoration was achieved when consumers on the East Coast were repowered. The transmission line was successfully returned to service at 17:50.

GPL expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and urged customers to report all localized faults to 592 226 4015/16 as the Company may not always be aware of the problem.
