A 13-year old boy drowned on Tuesday in the Mazaruni River, according to well-placed sources.

He was the son of son of well-known shopkeeper, Stephen “Syrup” Scipio of the bauxite mining town of Linden.

The boy’s body was expected to be flown out of the area.

Preliminary information is that the boy was walking on a landing to the edge of the waterway near his father’s shop at Serinamo. However, he missed one of the steps that was covered by water, fell and hit himself.

A woman, who was nearby, raised an alarm and a search was conducted but the teenager’s body was not found until one hour later when it floated.
