Residents of Bartica were Thursday morning breathing a sigh of relief after a puma was shot dead before it could have possibly attacked animals or persons in the residential area of the gold mining township.

Devon Douglas said he was having breakfast when a neighbour told him that a young puma was seen resting on a limb in a mango tree.

The experienced hunter said he immediately rushed to the yard at 6th Avenue Bartica where he shot the animal to its head in the presence of a large number of persons.

The animal was about five feet, six inches long.

Douglas said residents are on the lookout for another puma. He believed the now dead animal was hungry but sought refuge in a tree after he was cornered by pitbulls in the area.

He said police were initially summoned, but they never arrived to render assistance.

Residents believed that the puma could have easily attacked a very young child if it had an opportunity.
