A prisoner, who has been remanded for murder and attempted murder, on Sunday climbed on the roof of the Georgetown Prison.

Devon Thomas claimed that he decided to perch on the roof because other inmates have been threatening him. Sources said the prisoner walked through the main offices before climbing on the roof.

Fire fighters, police and prison wardens immediately went into action.

However, Thomas descended before they could have held him.

He is accused of murdering 25-year old Kumar Mohabir alias Dusky and Firelink of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara on February 23, 2013. Police also alleged that Thomas attempted to murder Mohabir’s brother, Narendra, on the same day.

The incident occurred on Vlissengen Road during Mash Day festivities.
