A Nigerian man, who entered into Guyana illegally, was Tuesday slapped with a GUY$30,000 fine or two months imprisonment and ordered deperted.

It is alleged that on July 1 2013, at Springlands Corentyne, Anthony Acka arrived in Guyana by water and disembarked without the consent of an Immigration Officer; contrary to Guyanese law.

When asked whether he pleaded guilty or not guilty, the defendant stated that “it is true that I entered illegally”.

According to the prosecution’s facts, on July 7 2013 Acka was arrested at Charity Essequibo, where he was asked to present his passport, and it was found that he had none. The defendant was then taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters where he was further questioned and he revealed that he had lost his passport in Suriname.

The court heard that Acka told the CID investigators that he came to Guyana in a small boat, without any documents, on July 1. He revealed also that at the time he had been heading to Venezuela to work with a friend. The defendant was subsequently charged for the offense.
