Residents of Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara on Monday woke up to severe flooding due to a problem with the drainage sluice.

“This morning when I woke up, I saw the whole yard and entire surroundings flooded,” a resident told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), George Nedd said the sluice door was wedged by a piece of wood and so could not have closed properly.

He said workers have since dived and removed the obstacle, resulting in the northern part of the village being drained during low tide.

Occupants of lower flats are among those scouring their premises of the thick silt that has been left behind by the coffee-brown water of the Atlantic Ocean. In a number of instances, wooden bridges have floated away.

Residents said they had to wade through six to eight inches of water especially in low-lying areas of the village to get to work and school.
