Murder accused Shameer Ali being lifted on a chair into a police vehicle.

Bandaged around his neck and lifted into the courtroom on a chair, a muted man was arraigned on a charge of murdering his reputed wife.

Shameer Ali’s failure to respond orally resulted in Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry coming off the bench and going close to the accused to read the indictable charge to him. He was seated on the chair outside the dock throughout the proceedings.

Ali is accused of murdering 23-year old Shameiza Ramdatt on June 8,2013 at Kuru Kuru Squatting Area.

The Chief Magistrate asked the police to ensure that a medical report is produced and arrangements made for legal aid to be provided to the accused when he returns to court on June 24.

His throat was bandaged because he had allegedly slit his throat shortly after allegedly killing Ramdatt. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and is now recovering from emergency surgery.

Clad in a black vest and a trunks, Ali refused to utter any words when asked repeatedly by the magistrate and a police detective to respond. “Mr. Ali, can you hear me? He’s noit responding,” remarked Sewnarine-Beharry. “I don’t see any indication that he is.”

The investigating detective went in front of Ali, waved and said to the magistrate: “He shook his eyebrow….He said something but the sound is not coming out,” said the policeman.

Before the magistrate read the charge to the man, she asked him to “clench your fist if you understand what I am saying” which he did.

The police prosecutor said the investigations were not completed.

After his arraignment, Ali was fetched out of the courtroom and downstairs on the chair where he waited for several minutes until a police vehicle went for him. He was lifted out of the chair and placed on the back seat. The seat was placed in the tray of the four wheeled drive vehicle.
