Teen pleads guilty to stealing car

A 16-year old boy on Monday pleaded guilty to stealing a car while a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer left to go to an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM).

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was remanded to police custody pending a probation report.

The lad of Lot 2 Henry Street, Werk-en-Rust, is accused of stealing the car valued at GUY$1.1 million in front of Citizens Bank, Camp Street, Georgetown.

The complainant is Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Marketing Executive, Abena Fung.

Court documents state that Fung’s husband parked the car with the engine on and went to the ATM to withdraw money when the teenager allegedly stole the car.

The incident occurred on April 5.

The car was subsequently recovered at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara.  Three youths in their mid-teens were arrested following a chase by the but only one was charged.
